Helpdesk | EU Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Market & Regulation

Aviation is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and is facing increasing regulatory, financial and societal pressure to decarbonise. In this context, SAF are recognised as one of the most promising near-and medium-term solutions to reduce lifecycle emissions while preserving connectivity and economic value.

However, the SAF landscape remains complex. Multiple feedstocks and production pathways coexist, EU regulatory frameworks are evolving rapidly, and stakeholders face major challenges related to investment, certification and operational implementation.

This info session aims to:

  • provide an overview of the current state of the EU SAF market, including key market dynamics and recent initiatives,
  • clarify core EU regulatory and certification questions, with a particular focus on:
    • the distinction between different fuel types falling under the SAF definition and their eligibility under EU SAF and synthetic fuels targets,
    • regulatory considerations related to co-processing, including the blending of renewable feedstocks or RFNBOs with conventional fuels in existing refinery units.

🎤 Speakers

  • International Power-to-X Hub
    • Frank Mischler (Director) and Antonio Fernandez Rodriguez (EU Policy aand Regulatory Advisor), sharing insights on EU market dynamics and policy frameworks
  • Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST)
    • Mathias Altmann (Senior Project Manager & Consultant), providing a technical and regulatory perspective on SAF pathways and implementation challenges
