About creating a strategic reserve for hydrogen
During the World Power to X Summit on October 8th in Marrakesh, the MED-GEM Network had the honor of participating in the opening session on “Green Hydrogen- The Game-Changer in the Global Energy Transition”, as part of the annual World Hydrogen Day.
Joined by global leaders such as Gérard Mestrallet (Special Envoy of the French President for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor), Lorenzo Ortona (Deputy Coordinator of the Mattei Plan, Office of the Prime Minister of Italy), Tarik Hamane (CEO of ONEE Group), and Nawfal El Fadil (Director of Green Hydrogen at MASEN), Frank Wouters, Director of MED-GEM Network, shared key insights on the transformative role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing industries and reshaping global energy systems.
Frank proposed an innovative approach to boost the hydrogen economy:
“We should create a strategic reserve for hydrogen, similar to what exists for fossil fuels. By redirecting part of the funds from these fossil fuel reserves, we could immediately stimulate demand for clean hydrogen and kickstart the projects that are ready to go. This would not only secure supply but also send a strong market signal about hydrogen’s future as a key energy carrier. Europe could for example start with a volume of 5 million tonnes by 2030, which would create immediate demand. ”
This high-level session explored cross-border collaboration, innovation, and investment strategies to scale green hydrogen globally. Special thanks to Manal Bernoussi for her dynamic moderation and to all the speakers for their enriching contributions.
