MED-GEM supports the Quantum Computing Hackathon – SESAME 2026

How can quantum computing help address the Middle East’s pressing water and energy challenges? From 5 to 7 November 2026, the Quantum Computing Hackathon – SESAME 2026 will bring together students and young researchers from across the region and beyond for three days of hands-on experimentation, teamwork and international mentorship.
Working in multidisciplinary teams, participants will develop algorithms, proofs of concept and prototype solutions inspired by real-world water and energy priorities. The event contributes directly to the ambitions of SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation and SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy.
The hackathon is organised by SESAME, CERN, the Open Quantum Institute, the Delegation of the European Union to Jordan and ASREN. The European Union-funded MED-GEM Network, implemented by GIZ International Services, joins the initiative as a supporting partner. MED-GEM Director Frank Wouters will also serve on the international jury, helping connect emerging quantum solutions with the region’s energy-transition needs.
The event will be held in English. Applications are open to Master’s and PhD students, highly motivated final-year Bachelor’s students, young researchers and early-career professionals until 28 September 2026.
