Advancing Lebanon's Green Energy Transition: A Path to Renewable Hydrogen
First National consultation Workshop for Hydrogen Development in Lebanon - Side Event to Beirut Energy Week

In a collaborative effort with the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) and thanks to Mr. Pierre El Khoury, NFP Lebanon, the MED-GEM Network, represented by Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, organized a pivotal side event during the Beirut Energy Week on September 20th. Bringing together MED-GEM experts and Lebanon's key national stakeholders, the consultation workshop became a platform for insightful discussions aiming to construct Lebanon's national hydrogen strategy. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Stefano Panighetti from the EU DEL in Lebanon, underlining the significance of collaborative efforts and the EU's dedication to supporting green energy initiatives in the region. H.E. Mr. Georges Boujikian, Minister of Industry, represented by Ms. Chantal Akl, emphasized Lebanon's commitment to sustainable energy and the necessity for partnerships and knowledge sharing.

The event featured two sessions. The first session, « Energy Transition in the EU and Lebanon: Challenges and Opportunities », showcased presentations on the EU's strategy on integrating renewable hydrogen, insights on green hydrogen prospects in the Arab world, and Lebanon's current energy reforms and clean energy initiatives. The second session focused on « Developing a roadmap for Lebanon's national hydrogen strategy », delving into policy and regulations, industry and infrastructure, finance and investment aspects.

Workshops within these sessions, moderated by esteemed experts, engaged in fruitful discussions. The first, led by Dr. Sorina Mortada, explored policy and regulatory dimensions, addressing national strategies, legal frameworks, and market growth. The second, facilitated by Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, centered on industry and infrastructure, discussing project tenders, technology, and infrastructure development. The third workshop, led by Ms. Carine Azkoul and facilitated by Ms. Sara Helou, tackled finance and investment topics, including financial resources, project bankability, and public-private partnerships.

The discussions highlighted Lebanon's enthusiasm for renewable/green hydrogen and associated infrastructure development, essential for diversifying energy sources and decarbonizing sectors like industry, transportation, and buildings. Challenges such as limited electricity, land, and water availability were noted, with financial support, trust-building with institutions, and supportive regulations being crucial. A clear roadmap was emphasized, suggesting research and development programs, educational initiatives, pilot projects, and awareness campaigns.

Recommendations included a preliminary study to quantify Lebanon's renewable/green hydrogen potential, analyzing local and export markets, forming a roadmap for hydrogen development in Lebanon. This event marked a significant step toward Lebanon's green energy future, emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and strategic planning.
